Thai AirAsia to add domestic destinations

The CEO of Thai AirAsia has announced the carrier will add three new domestic locations in the new year. Talking to reporters, Tassapon Bijleveld said the airline will launch routes to Roi Et, Loei and Nan from its main hub at Don Muang Airport in Bangkok on 8 February.

Expounding on the attractions of each new destination, the CEO said Roi Et was noted for its temples and religious shrines while Loei Airport provided access to some of Thailand’s finest natural environments. He added that Nan boasted a rich cultural heritage.

Thai AirAsia will serve each of the three destinations with two round-trip flights a day. CEO Bijleveld says this will provide tourists and business travellers with greater convenience and allow them to tailor trips to suit their particular itineraries.

The CEO finished off by saying the Tourism Authority of Thailand together with other domestic travel bureaus had been proactive in enabling Thai AirAsia start the new routes. The three new destinations will see the airline vying with Nok Air, the budget arm of Thai Airways International, for passengers on the routes.

Nok Air also flies out of Don Muang and is the only other airline that serves the three provincial towns. Airline industry insiders say competition on flight routes keeps fares competitive. The fact that Thai AirAsia is currently offering discounted fares to mark the launch of the services seems to bear this out.
