Known also as Chek Lap Kok Airport, HKIA is an important regional passenger hub and gateway to almost 50 destinations in China and the rest of Asia. It is also one of the world's busiest passenger airports and home to one of the world's largest passenger terminal buildings. More than 100 airlines operate flights from the airport to over 180 cities across the globe.
In 2019, 17 new destinations were added to the HKIA’s extensive air network, 5 in China: Beijing Daxing International Airport, Hefei, Jieyang, Yangzhou, Yinchuan; 3 – in Japan: Nagasaki (Japan), Niigata (Japan), Shimojishima (Japan); and 9 – elsewhere:
Borg El Arab (Egypt), Dover Cheswold (US), Doncaster (UK), Guwahati (India), Istanbul Ataturk Airport (Turkey), Labuan (Malaysia), Phu Quoc (Vietnam), Puerto Princesa (Philippines), and Yekaterinburg (Russia).
In December 2019, passenger volume in HKIA declined 12.5% to 5.7 million compared to December 2018. The most significant decrease in December was shown by passenger volume to and from Mainland China and Southeast Asia.
Vivian Cheung, Executive Director of Airport Operations for the Airport Authority, said, “We went through a challenging year in 2019. Looking ahead, we will continue to enhance the airport’s facilities to improve the passenger experience at HKIA even more. HKIA will always emphasise passenger-centric features to provide a vibrant, world-class experience for travellers.”
