Myanmar flag carrier undergoes rebranding

The management of Myanmar’s national carrier have given it a new name under a major rebranding and modernisation. The airline has been called Myanma Airways since 1989, but yesterday it was rechristened Myanmar National Airlines.

Captain Than Tun, the president of the state-owned carrier, said the rebranding was consistent with the long-term plan of adapting to serve modern passengers. The captain continued by saying a new name signalled a modernisation which would see the airline overhaul its operations and therefore be better suited to the changing requirements of 21st century passengers.

Myanmar National Airlines flies to 26 domestic airports and its hub is Yangon International Airport. As part of its restructuring, the airline will launch an online reservations and payments system as well as upgrade passenger check-in procedures at Yangon.

An upgrade of check-in on Myanmar National Airlines’ flights equates to not watching the clerk manually enter passenger details. The clerks will use an electronic system for the first time. The airline says it hopes to extend this convenience to airports at Mandalay, Naypyitaw and Nyaung-U in the very near future.

In a publicity statement, Myanmar National Airlines says it also plans to operate flights to a set timetable. The final part of the modernisation is to provide a budget that will allow staff and air crews to undergo training in safety and customer service.
