Tourism industry in Malaysia Reports Growth in QI–QIII

Tourism industry in Malaysia reports steady growth during the first three quarters of 2019. The overall performance between January and September showed positive development. 

This year, between January and September, Malaysia welcomed over 20 million international tourists, 3.7 percent more than during the same period last year. 

Traditionally, Singapore remains the main tourist source market for Malaysia with 7,868,755 tourist arrivals. Other nations are fare behind: Indonesia in number two with 2,792,776 tourists, China – number three with 2,413,956. Thailand comes fourth (1,442,224) with Brunei following (929,789). India (539,167), South Korea (508,080), Vietnam (323,393), Japan (321,283) and the Philippines (317,294) also secured themselves places in the top-10 of countries with the highest tourist arrivals contribution.

Tourist expenditure grew 6.9 percent compared to 2018 with per capita figure reaching MYR3,289.9 (USD786). At the same time, the average length of stay remained almost the same – 7.4 nights. Singapore made the highest contribution in terms of tourism generated revenue bringing Malaysia MYR16.3 billion with China being a runner-up with MYR12.8 billion. Visitors from Indonesia spent MYR8.8 billion, while tourists from Thailand and India – MYR2.8 billion and MYR2.5 billion respectively.

Out of the total number of visitors tourists from long haul countries constitute only 9.7 percent.
