Dharamshala–Chandigarh Direct Flights to Start Mid-November

Dharamshala, a popular hill station in Himachal Pradesh, India, will soon be connected by a direct flight with Chandigarh, the capital of the northern Indian states of Punjab and Haryana, effective mid-November.

Home to Dalai Lama's residence, currently Dharamshala can only be reached by air from New Delhi with both Spice Jet and Air India offering one-way tickets between the capital and the hill station from INR4,500. The nearest railway station is some 90 km away from Dharamshala, hence the majority of travellers use buses to get to the town. Narrow winding mountain roads often make any bus journey to Dharamshala a torture.

The launch of Dharamshala–Chandigarh route goes in line with the Indian Government's plan to improve the regional connectivity scheme and boost tourism. Direct flights from Chandigarh to Dharamshala, sitting some 250 km north, will take less than one hour. The route will be served by a 70-seater aircraft and will be performed in the morning with flights to Chandigarh scheduled to leave at 8.30 am and the return flights to Dharamshala – at 10 am. It is also expected that a one-way ticket will cost from INR1,700.

Besides being the centre of Tibetian community and culture, Dharamshala is famous for tea production. Tea tourism is an important part of tourism in Dharamshala with Kangra green tea grown locally considered among the best in India.
