Uttarakand Cities to Get Podcars, Ropeways

Tourists and pilgrims in Haridwar, an ancient city and important Hindu pilgrimage site in North India's Uttarakhand state, will soon be able to travel within the city in podcars.

The government of Uttarakand in collaboration with Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will launch laser-guided automated podcars to serve the city. Haridwar will become the first destination in the country to get such means of transportation.

The idea was prompted by successful implementation of similar cost-friendly personal rapid transit systems in the UK and Germany. The feasibility study was conducted and confirmed efficiency and cost effectiveness of podcars in Haridwar. Besides, the officials are also going to install ropeways in Rishikesh and Dehradun. In Europe, both podcars and ropeways proved an efficient means of transportation in locations with mountainous terrain.

Depending on geographic location and transportation needs these destinations will get the most suitable types of transportation systems.

Haridwar will get a 8 km long personalised podcar corridor that will cover the area from the shrine of Brahma Kund in Har-Ki-Pauri to the suburban Jwalapur. The podcar corridor will have 11 stations. Each podcar will accommodate up to 6 passengers and will rely on a laser-guided operation system. Currently, Haridwar already has two ropeways to Mansa Devi and Chandi Devi temples.

In Rishikesh, the ropeway project will link the two banks of River Ganga. It will ease the burden off the suspension bridge, Ram Jhula which has been suffering from conjestion since the popular Laxman Jhula bridge was closed for public a few months ago due to poor condition.
