Nuwara Eliya to Get 50 Million US Dollar Cable Car System

Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka's top tourist attraction hidden in the tea country hills will soon get its own cable car system. It will link Nuwara Eliya Race Course with the Nanu Oya railway station and Single Tree Hill.

The cable car system will feature 21 supportive pillars. Small cabins each accommodating up to 10 passengers will be used. It is expected that at the launch stage there will be 43 cabins in operation. The number then will be doubled to reach 86 cars later if necessary.

It is not going to be Sri Lanka's first cable car project but with an estimate cost of USD 50 million it is definitely the largest one. It will be launched as a BOI project and a joint venture between the local firm Outdoor Engineering Lanka Pvt. Ltd and Australia's Doppelmayr Cable Car Ltd.

The cabinet of ministers had given clearance to set up a project with Board of Investment facilities, for a proposal submitted by the Minister of Plantations Industries. The project will be launched within a couple of months. When finished, it will make its contribution into boosting tourist arrivals to Nuwara Eliya, the authorities believe.
