China Eastern Expands Its Low-Cost Operations to SEA

China Eastern Airlines, a major Chinese airline operating international, domestic and regional routes, is planning to expands its budget air travel network to the Asian regions outside China.

It is definitely going to become a new strong competitor for other regional budget airlines like AirAsia or Lion Air. China Eastern's low-cost carrier operates under China United Airlines brand. Currently, the airline is based in Beijing and serves exclusively domestic routes out of the Beijing Nanyuan Airport. Its fleet consists of 49 aircraft.

The representatives of China Eastern shared their vision on the future of low-cost travel (LCT) as very promising. China United Airlines entered this segment five years ago, in 2014, and now with the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) policy, it is right time for the airline to expand its budget air travel offers to South-East Asia, South Korea and Japan.

The regional expansion plan of China Eastern includes strategic cooperation, joint ventures and equity investment. The airline has already close ties with Japan Airlines, also known as Nikkō, and Qantas, Australia's flag carrier and its largest airline by fleet size, international flights and international destinations.
