According to AirAsia's representatives, this new route will further strengthen AirAsia's role in tourism in Malaysia catering for both domestic and international visitors travelling between states of Penang and Melaka.
Since 2008, both Melaka and Georgetown in Penang were added to UNESCO World Heritage Sites list. While Georgetown for decades remained one of the most popular destinations in the country, UNESCO's listing of Melaka helped the city boost local tourism industry significantly.

Effective from July, 1, two of Malaysia's historical destinations, Penang and Melaka, will be linked by AirAsia's direct flight. The introduction of Penang-Melaka route is set to boost tourist arrivals into Melaka, helping support the state government’s target of attracting 20 million visitors this year.
