It is planned that when open the entrance to the museum will be free of charge. The exhibitions will cover 23,000 square metres with six sections of the museum dedicated to the Chinese marine culture and history, marine ecology and environment, science education and interactive programs. There will be on-site restaurants, cafes, cinemas and souvenir shops.

The main target of creating the National Maritime Museum in Tianjin is to enhance public awareness of ecological problems related to the sea and marine life, to stimulate sea protection and marine research.
