New Terminal Opens at Tjilik Riwut Airport

A new terminal at Tjilik Riwut Airport, Palangkaraya, Central Kalimantan, Indonesia, is ready for operation. Several routes previously suspended due to construction works at the airport will be reopened soon.

Both local residents who need more options for getting to and from the island and tourists will benefit from reopening of the routes, the airport’s acting executive general manager assured the public.

The two such routes are from Palangkaraya to Jakarta, the capital of the country, and to Surakarta (Solo), a city in Central Java. They will be operated by Batik Air and Citilink. Later a new route from Palangkaraya to/from Makassar (Ujung Padang), the gateway to the eastern Indonesia’s Sulawesi island, will follow, too.

The new terminal of Tjilik Riwut Airport has a passenger capacity of about 2,200 people per day and covers a total area of 29,124 square meters – almost double of the area of the old terminal. In 2018, the airport served about one million passengers.

Central Kalimantan is one of five provinces of the Indonesian part of Borneo island. It attracts visitors with its rich biodiversity and one of the oldest rainforests in the world that dates back 130 million years back – some 70 million years older than the Amazon rainforest.
