Will Bagan Get a Night Theatre Soon?

The Department of Archaeology and National Museum in Bagan has recently disclosed interest expressed by a Chinese company in building a theatre in the heritage zone of BaganMandalay Region, Myanmar.

The company under question is the Yunnan Culture Industry Investment Holding Co. The representatives of the company visited Bagan late March in order to discuss feasibility of constructing and opening a theatre in Bagan. According to the Chinese company, their objective is to enhance the culture and heritage of Bagan through cooperation with local communities, articsts and ethnic minorities.

While any construction in Bagan is restricted by local rules, regulations, procedures and the nature of cultural heritage, the department of archaeology admits that there might be some sense in creating an attraction of this kind in Bagan. The archaeological park is open to tourists during the day time bus as soon as the sun goes down there is nothing to do in Bagan. A theatre might fill the gap in the late time entertainment for visitors at the same time contributing to development of local econimies.

For the Chinese company, it is not the first project of the kind. Yunnan Culture Industry Investment Holding Co. is run by the Chinese government and is also the largest tour operator in China. They already run a similar theatre in Angror Wat in Cambodia.
