Kampot hopes to get cruise boat pier

The Cambodian riverside town of Kampot is to get a new pier to enable it to tap into the Southeast Asian passenger cruise market. City-hall director Sim Vuthea said an application had already been submitted to the Asian Development Bank for the necessary US$40 million funding to build the facility.

The administrative director continued by saying that the project was waiting for a procedural report due on 24 November from the bank before it could be put out to tender. He expounded by adding that city hall hoped to begin construction sometime in the latter half of 2015.

Mr Vuthea finished off by saying the pier would be located midway between the town and the adjacent district of Teuk Chhu and that it would also include immigration offices. Commenting on the pier proposal, local tourism bureau director Soy Kinal said it would enable Kampot to attract tourists from the neighbouring countries of Vietnam and Thailand.

Kampot is just a few kilometres north of the Gulf of Thailand and is one of Southeast Asia’s burgeoning tourism hotspots. It is a relaxing location offering glimpses of the Cambodia of yesteryear as well as the gateway to Phu Quc Island and Preah Monivong National Park.
