Cambodia Wants to Raise Street Food Standards

Street food will be featured as one of the categories in the Clean City Contest in Cambodia. The Ministry of Tourism is sure that good and safe street food will help attract more foreign visitors to the country.

The Ministry of Tourism and the National Committee for Clean City Assessment will ask the government to add street food category to the next, seventh edition of the National Clean City Day event. According to the plan, it will help is rising hygiene in the preparation and overall safety standards of street food in Cambodia, stimulate vendors to be more resposnsible, and encourage tourists try local delicacies more often.

According to the chairman of the Cambodian Chapter of the Pacific Asia Travel Association, Cambodia is far behind their neighbours like Singapore and Thailand in terms of cleanliness of street food. Many tourists regard street food as a prime local experience when visiting Asian countries and reputation of a safe street food destination definitely adds to the attractiveness of the country in the eyes of foreign visitors.

'Tourists in Thailand and Singapore do not think twice about trying local treats sold in the streets because they know they are safe and clean. If we can achieve the same standard, it will boost the number of international visitors to Cambodia and also encourage more locals to eat out in the street,' the chairman said.
