Cold weather draws tourists to UNESCO park

Colder weather over the past week has encouraged tourists to take camping trips to Thailand’s second biggest national park. The chief ranger at Thap Lan National Park said up to 5,000 visitors had spent nights in tents since the start of the cold season.

Taywin Meesap told media sources that the cold season usually starts around the beginning of November and between then and mid-February is the best time to visit. He added that the park also tended to be greener at this time as the cold season followed straight on from the rainy season.

Mr Meesap finished off by saying sights such as the Keb Tawan Cliff, Thap Lan Reservoir and Man Fah Waterfall together with the vast groves of talipot palm trees were best seen against the backdrops of amazing sunrises and sunsets. Food and drink vendors at Thap Lan say the increase in tourists has given them a nice financial boon.

Thap Lan National Park is around 230kms east of Bangkok and close to Wang Nam Khiao Forest. It is between Nakhon Ratchasima and Sa Kaew. International visitors wishing to camp or stay in lodge accommodation at the park can take inter-city buses to either of these towns and then switch to local buses for the final stretch of the journey.
