Will AirAsia Manage to Enter Myanmar Aviation Market?

As part of its regional strategy in Indo-China, AirAsia is committed to enter Myanmar, the CEO of the airline has confirmed recently. Does it mean we will soon have a choice of affordable flights between the main tourist destinations in the country?

The Indo-Chinese region including Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia, remains relatively uncovered by AirAsia that currently serve seven destinations and 13 routes there. As the airline's goal for 2019, the CEO sees its expansion into Indo-China. Very much welcome, Sir!

Earlier this year, AirAsia was discussing a possibility of launching a budget airline in Myanmar in partnership with FMI Air. Yet the Myanmar authorities contunue blocking any initiatives involving domestic flights within Myanmar in order to protect local (mostly governmental) airlines securing the domestic market for themselves. Had the venture been a success, AirAsia would have taken up to 95% of the SEA aviation market.

FMI Air then ceased its operation on July, 20th this year thus becoming the third airline in Myanmar to stop its flights after five consecutive years of service and the negotiations came to a halt. Despite the challenges, AirAsia is committed to become the major player in Myanmar and it is only the matter of time when the airline enters the market.
