Nok Air on the trail of Surin elephants

Nok Air is adding a new route to its timetable with a service connecting Bangkok and Surin. The Thai budget carrier says it will commence one of its Fly ‘n’ Ride services linking the two locations with effect from 3 November 2014.

Nok’s Fly ‘n’ Ride services are a combination of flight and bus and allow the carrier to serve destinations without their own airports. In the case of the new Surin flights, passengers will travel from Bangkok’s Don Muang Airport to Buri Ram by aeroplane and then complete the journey to Surin by bus.

The onward service is actually a continuation of what will be a daily Bangkok-Buri Ram service from 27 October. The flight from Don Muang is scheduled to depart at 14:20 and, after a 30-minute transit in Buri Ram, will arrive in Surin at 17:30. The journey from Surin follows a similar timetable.

The new service will allow tourists to conveniently reach Surin for its famous elephant round-up. The annual pachyderm extravaganza takes place on the third weekend of November.

This year’s round-up is scheduled to begin on 14 November. The event sees up to 300 elephants and their mahouts descend on the town for elephant shows and to allow visitors to get up close and personal to these magnificent beasts.
