Wary of Flying? Weigh Safety of Airlines Before Buying Tickets

Though deadly accidents do happen in our days, aviation safety has become remarkably higher than it used to be even a couple of decades ago. If you are one of those travellers who are wary of flying, there are some useful online resorses which can help evaluate the safety of the airline before you make your decision whether to fly it or not.

One of the most important sources of information is the United Nations' aviation agency which sets international safety standards for countries in general. You may want to think twice before buying your air ticket for a domestic flight in these countries. Currently only five countries are said not to meet these requirements – by the way, Indonesia got off this blacklist two years ago.

Certain countries and regions ban airlines they consider unsafe from their skies. In fact, the ban concerns not only safety standards but sustainability requirements, too. For example, 120 airlines from around the world are not permitted to enter European skies. They are mostly smaller airlines from developing African countries.

There is an online accident database, the Aviation Safety Network, where you can search by an airline or country.

Specific websites like AirlineRatings or AirDisaster have their own accident bases to explore. Surprisingly, searching crash records can help cope with your fear of flying as the overwhelming majority of what is called crashes have no fatalities – or few.

As a rule of thumb, remember that airlines with many international routes on their route network almost always are more reliable as far as safety is concierned.

Fly safe!
