Sri Lanka Aims at Becoming World's Leading Destination for Wellness Tourism

Growing interest from the part of health conscious travellers to Ayurveda and wellness products and services gives Sri Lanka a chance to position itself as an important destination for wellness and spa tourism.

The National Export Strategy names the country's wellness tourism sector one of the key sectors for development and gaining international recognition.

Sri Lanka seems to have all the necessary components to succeed in this field. It can offer fresh locally grown ingredients to meet the demand for organic, vegan and vegetarian food which is also on the rise among the Western travellers. It has national culinary recipes to offer to foodies, too. The country has long established traditions in Ayurveda medicine and pampering supported by numerous professionals working in the sector. There is a plan to further develop this sector focusing on raising quality standards and promoting it as an authentic tourist product. Finally, both Western standards medical services and a choice of alternative medical practices make Sri Lanka a great destination for medical tourism.

Sri Lanka does already attract its fare share of spa and welness enthusiasts. The destinations of choice for those looking for spa treatments are Colombo, Mirissa, Galle and Unawatuna.
