Myanmar to extend e-visas to all EU nations

Myanmar’s immigration minister has stated that the nation’s newly introduced tourist e-visas will soon be available to all citizens of the European Union (EU). Minister Khin Yi told reporters this week that although citizens from some EU nations could apply for e-visas online, this option was not available to residents of others.

The e-visa application system is currently open to passport-holders of 43 countries such as the US and Australia as well as EU ones including the UK and France. Other EU countries that include Finland, Greece and the Republic of Ireland are not on the list.

According to TTR Weekly, Minister Khin Yi says Myanmar plans to rectify this situation and allow citizens of all 28 EU countries to apply for e-visas for the purpose of tourism. Tourists fill in online applications for e-visas on the Myanmar Immigration and Population website.

Once the application and payment have been accepted, the ministry issues an approval letter which tourists bring with them when they come to Myanmar. The letter is used to get a visa at international airports in the country. The cost of each application is US$50 and allows a stay of 28 days in-country.
