Plan for new Bangkok air terminal expedited

Thailand’s national airports operator has announced the scheme to open a new terminal at Bangkok’s main airport is being accelerated.

Thailand’s national airports operator has announced the scheme to open a new terminal at Bangkok’s main airport is being accelerated. The chairman of the Airports of Thailand (AoT), Prasong Phunthanet, told reporters that the new terminal would increase annual passenger capacity at Suvarnabhumi Airport from 45 million to 65 million.

According to the Bangkok Post, the chairman continued by saying the new passenger terminal will be constructed on the north side of the current Concourse A and will have 10 bays for aircraft. AoT also says that the project will include a monorail system to transport passengers between the terminals.

Mr Phunthanet said Aot planners estimate the cost of the terminal will be THB24 billion and the total expansion of Suvarnabhumi at more than THB62 billion. He added that the AoT board still had to iron out the small details of the plan before passing it to the government for final approval.

The chairman finished off by saying that if the cabinet endorsed the project, contractors would be invited to submit tenders early in 2015. Under the terms of the initial project the new building will be open for passengers sometime in 2018.
