Most tourists work on vacation

Majority of tourists admit to doing work while on vacation, checking emails especially, a world survey reveals.

In a recent TripAdvisor survey it was revealed that a massive 77 per cent of travellers work while on vacation. Furthermore, many respondents in this global poll felt that more time off was needed and were willing to forego pay as a result.

Conducted among some 16,000 respondents across 10 countries, the survey had some revealing statistics among nationals who typically visit Thailand. As many as 65 per cent admitted to checking emails while on holiday, almost as many regularly responded to emails and 26 per cent even went as far as editing documents.

The Americans were among the highest workers while abroad, with 91 per cent confessing to ‘logging in’. Thirty seven per cent do so daily and a similar number felt that it was an obligation brought on by the internet. What’s worse, 18 per cent felt guilty if they didn’t clear the inbox while sitting on the beach.

Other interesting trends about vacations were revealed among the modern day traveller. The Japanese and, Spanish and Brazilians complained about not having nearly enough paid vacation days a year,     despite all being above the average of 24 per year for developed countries. Americans get the lowest number of holidays, just 18, while the French and Russians were largely ‘satisfied’ with their 30 days a year.

Despite this, 66 per cent of Americans felt their vacation was worthwhile and good value for money in unwinding. In Thailand the ‘average’ vacation is 12 days long. Thais typically get two weeks leave a year but do enjoy 14 or more public holidays throughout the year.
