Kampot Wants High-Speed Rail and Airport

While Sihanoukville hospitality sector is booming thanks to huge Chinese investment a neighbouring seaside town of Kampot, also in Cambodia, feels somewhat neglected and steps forward with a high-speed rail project to boost tourism.

Last week Kampot provincial governor suggested an investment scheme to devolop a high-speed rail and a provincial airport which will facilitate travel between the capital city of Phnom Penh and Kampot. High speed trains could make travel between the capital and Kampot a whisk with less than an hour spent on the wheels while the airport will attract more visitors - both local and international – to the beaches of the province which still retain the quiet charm of Sihanoukville of 10 years ago.

This private initiative called the Kampot Capital Development is aimed at raising USD 50 million from individual investors. The funding would be gained by trading the 50,000 shares to the public with no more than USD1,000 spent by each individual ready to invest.

Both financial experts and capital market professionals though are quite sceptical about the feasibility of the plan – both from the legal point of view and from the economic one.
