The Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council (MHTC) considers quality accommodation a key component in the healthcare travel system. Many of healthcare travellers come for long or complex medical procedures including general screenings and interventions and require a rehabilitation period not necessarily in hospital before they are cleared by doctors fit to fly.
In the frame of raising Malaysia's profile as the world's prime destination for healthcare services MHTC will develop special packages pairing medical services with accommodation to offer healthcare travellers full service solutions. To become a part of the program, hotels should provide access for wheel-chair guests, offer spacious rooms with wheel-chair friendly facilities throughout the property and in general ensure friendly and supportive ambiance for post-treatment rehabilitation.
In 2017, over a million travellers visited Malaysia with the purpose of getting certain medical help or services. Each year, this number increases by 16%-17%. The main source markets for Malaysian medical tourism sector are Indonesia, China, India, Vietnam, Myanmar, Bangladesh and the Middle East. They seek help in cardiology, fertility, orthopaedics, oncology, neurology, gastroenterology, dental and aesthetics (cosmetic surgery).
