Beijing's Calling All Theatre Buffs

From September, 7 till October, 27 the Lao She International Theatre Festival will be drawing all theatre goers to Beijing, China where theatre troupes from around the world will present their payls to the wide audience.

There will be 11 plays staged by Chinese, French, Russian, and Polish theatre companies. China will be represented by performances staged by Beijing People's Art Theater, Hong Kong Repertory Theater, and Shaanxi People's Art Theater. Besides, the festival program features other types of theatre-related activities like forums and seminars, theatre workshops, and script reading sessions, all opened to general public.

It is the second edition of the festival launched last year and named after a prominent Chinese novelist and playwright Lao She. Beijing-born, he was one of the most significant figures of Chinese literature of the 20th century. Some of the most important works of Lao She include his 'Rickshaw Boy' novel published in 1936, 'Four Generation Under One Roof' (1944–1950), and the 1957 play 'Teahouse'. The visitors of the festival will have a chance to see a new adaptation of 6 short stories of the auther staged under the name 'Lao She Going to the Fair'.
