Trincomalee to Become Eastern Tourism Hub

The master plan ordered by the Ministry of Megapolis and Western Development of Sri Lanka, will remodel Trinco, a major resort port city in the Eastern Province, into a hub for tourism, exports and logistics.

The master plan follows a ‘B.L.U.E. (biodiversity, liveability, uniqueness, economy) urbanism approach and is aimed at protecting the biodiversity and uniqueness of Trincomalee while strenthening its economy and allowing Trinco to grow into the largest city of Eastern Sri Lanka by 2050. The plan includes further urban development of the region, namely rational land use, transportation and infrastructure. The plan also proposes a revamp of the Hingurakgoda international airport which together with the development of the Colombo-Trincomalee Economic Corridor will increase the regional connectivity.

Currently Trinco can be reached by bus both from Colombo and Jaffna. Travelling from Colombo on the southwestern coast to Trincomalee on the northeastern coast takes about 6 hours; while a 240 km route from Jaffna can be covered in 5 hours. If you go by train, a Colombo-Trinco journey may take as long as 9 hours. A flight from Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport will bring you to Trinco in a whisk – it is just one hour 15 minutes.
