Floods Remain Possible in Myanmar, NE Thailand, Laos

Heavy rains responsible for the recent collapse of the dam in Attapeu, southwestern province of Laos, continue to hinder travel plans of those who are heading to the western, northern and northeastern border regions of Thailand and southern parts of Laos.

Before travelling to Pakse, Champasak, Paksong on Bolaven Plateau as well as the 4000 islands region in Laos take note that the situation in these regions due to heavy flooding remains critical. Up to 20% of tours to Ubon Ratchathani province in Thailand, as well as to Pakse and Paksong in Laos during the long weekend of July 27-30 have been cancelled.

The water levels in Mekong are up from south up north to the Thai province of Bueng Kan. In Nong Khai, Thailand, and Vientiane, Laos, Mekong water levels are still within the safe ranges but the dam is being closely monitored. Kanchanaburi, especially Sangkhlabury district, is also affected. In the western Thai province of Tak flashfloods led to immediate closure of the highest waterfall in the country, Thi Lo Su Waterfall located in the Umphang Wildlife Sanctuary.

Similarly, those who have been planning to reach the southern parts of Vietnam from Thailand via Laos overland, should postpone their trips or consider other routes or means of transport.
