Shuttle Buses Now Connect Yangon Airport and Railway Station

Starting last Friday, Omni Focus bus company launched shuttle bus service between Yangon International Airport and Yangon Central Railway Station.

30 buses are now plying the route starting from Terminal 1, heading south along Pyay Road, then at Hotel Yangon intersection turning east to continue further south along Kabaraye Pagoda Road and finally reaching Yangon Central Railway Station. Buses make 16 stops at designated bus stops near hotels, shopping centres, pagodas and supermarkets along the way.

The distance between the airport and the railway station is about 17 km but it takes shuttle buses almost an hour to complete the journey due to rather heavy traffic along Kabaraye Pagoda Road. One-way ticket costs MMK500 (USD0.36).

Buses are parked near the airport terminal and leave when full – currently there is no fixed schedule but it is expected that there will be a departure every 5-10 minutes. After more information is collected regarding the passenger flow, the fixed schedule will be introduced. The first bus will leave the airport at 5am while the last one – at 10pm. Right now the route is being served by 30 buses but Omni Focus is ready to add another 20 vehicles if there is enough demand.

The company representative said they had the government permission to start operation since last July but the negotiations with the airoport authorities regarding the parking lot for buses were a tough matter. Airport shuttle buses seem to be a very promising initiative from which both passengers and the airport staff will definitely benefit as the alternative way of travelling between these two locations is taxi charging at least 20 times more.
