Myanmar to Celebrate Waso Full Moon Day on July 27 This Year

The annual celebration of Waso Moon Day marking the beginning of the Buddhist Lent in Myanmar will be held on July, 27 this year.

One of the holiest days of the Buddhist calendar in memory of Buddhah's first sermon on Four Noble Truth, the full moon of Waso is celebrated all over the country. It ushers in the annual monsoon period which lasts three month. During this period monks spend their time at their monasteries observing the lent and meditating. Lay people donate robes and food to monks to support them during the lent period and shinbyu ordination ceremnies are held in different monasteries.

Waso is also the time of colourful festivals one of which, Waso Chinlone Festival, is held in Mandalay and attracts tourists and locals from all over the country. Chinlone is a traditional sport in Myanmar dating back to ancient times. It is an unusual ball game as it focuses rather on the beauty of the game than on winning or losing. It is a team kind of sport with each chinlone team consisting of 6 players who use their feet and knees to control the ball, dance and demostrate their acrobatic skills. Each team performs their art alone, one by one.
This year, Waso Chinlone Festival will last two week, from July 13 till the day of the full moon of Waso. It will take place on the grounds of Mahamuni Paya, the most sacred pagoda in Mandalay. Over 1000 teams will participate in the festival.
