Travelling to Korean Islands Will Be 50% Cheaper During Summer

Never thought that there were any worth visiting islands in Korea? Now it is high time to reconsider: there is a 50% discount during summer but only if you are young – not just young at heart, we mean.

In an attempt to boost tourism and encourage local tourists and foreigners alike to visit islands throughout the country, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries of Korea has announced huge discounts for young travellers aged under 28 on ferry rides. During the weekends you can get 20% off the original price while on weekdays the price of the tickets is slashed down to 50%.

The promotion is valid through the whole summer period. To get a discounted ticket, you have first to buy a discount coupon for about USD6 and then buy the ticket itself at the promotional price. The longest ferry trip under this promotion which is from Gangneung on the mainland to Ulleungdo Island located about 180 km east, will cost USD82 with a 50% discount and a discount coupon included while the original price is hefty USD152.

The ministry say the are opening 77 ocean routes served by 121 vessels operated by 51 company. It is not the first time the discounts are offered to the travellers to Korean islands: a similar promotion was announced in December 2017–February 2018 and proved to be a success.
