A New Tourist Site to Appear in Stung Treng Province in Cambodia

The Cambodian government is considering the question of developing an area located 400 km north of the capital into a new tourist destination.

Thalaboriwath district in Stung Treng province is famous for tiny black pebbles called ‘black rice’ by the local people. The Khmer name for themis ‘ang kor neang kmao’. Their composition has drawn the attention of scientists and experts who are trying to learn more about their history as well. The whole area is of cultural and historical significance which might beinteresting for tourists. 

At present Stung Treng is mainly visited by transit touristson their way to Banlung, Kratie&Vicharey National park and as a place to cross the boarder with Laos to get to 4000 islands. On Porshean, director of Stung Treng’s tourist department, said they were working on the creation of tourist routes. Ouk Bunthon, the province’s deputy governor, expressed the idea that the initiative would promote the advancement of the province. Some activities are being undertaken to turn the area into a cultural and historical site. 

Though the province lacks hotels and restaurants to satisfythe demand, Stung Treng keeps on drawing the attention of travellers. Last year 9000 foreigners visited it.
