Fire at Khon Kaen Airport stops morning flights

A fire on an upper level of Khon Kaen Airport’s passenger terminal early this morning led to the cancellation of all flights. A travel advisory posted up on the airport’s website said the fire erupted in an electrical control room at around 05:00.

Firefighters and other emergency services crews were quickly on the scene. The bulletin said it took two hours to put out the fire. The Airports Department has released an additional notification saying the building had been evacuated and would probably reopen again after lunch.

The department noted that a short circuit in a control cabinet was the cause of the fire and the reason for the NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) warning the airport would not be dealing with inbound or outbound flights. The notice advised passengers departing or arriving on flights at Khon Kaen to contact their airlines if they needed more information.

12GO ASIA reports eyewitnesses at the scene said passengers were provided with shuttle transfer services to Udon Thani Airport. The two facilities are the main air gateways to the upper part of the Esarn region of Thailand and are only 130kms apart.
