Phnom Penh ready to roll out new fleet of public buses

City Hall authorities in Phnom Penh are getting ready to put 100 new buses on the city’s streets. Spokesperson Met Measpheakdey said the fleet would be used to inaugurate five new routes and the first of these would launch in early July.

He said the plan was to add a total of seven routes to the burgeoning city bus network and the final two would be added before year’s end. The spokesperson confirmed the new fleet had arrived at Sihanoukville Port early last week.

He explained that the buses would be driven up from Sihanoukville to Phnom Penh in batches of 20 to avoid creating tailbacks on National Highway 4. An unnamed City Hall source says the buses were donated by a China-based bus manufacturer.

Founded in 2014, Phnom Penh City Bus currently offers service on three central routes. The long-term plan is to set up 18 routes. 12GO ASIA’s travel specialists say the buses provide an alternative to travelling on motodop motorcycle taxis or tuktuks.
