Myanmar ramps up programme to get Bagan UNESCO listed

Officials in Myanmar have released a schedule of operations to have the historic temples of Bagan listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Bagan Archaeology Department director Aung Aung Kyaw said the final application should be ready for submission by the end of September.

He continued by saying a redefined cultural and historic zone should have been decided on by the end this month. He noted that the new boundaries meant residential buildings in New Bagan would not have to be knocked down.

The director finished off by saying the draft documents for the UNESCO submission were at present about 60 per cent done. Once the application has been officially registered, the UNESCO assessment board is expected to take about 12 months to make a decision.

Rated by many as Myanmar’s top tourism draw, Bagan boasts a collection of 2,000 plus temples, pagodas and other sites dating from as far back as the 10th century. 12GO ASIA is a one-stop location for train tickets from Mandalay and Yangon to Bagan as well as flight reservations to Bagan Nyaung-u Airport.
