Thai weather bureau says north storms to continue through weekend

Thailand’s Meteorological Department yesterday warned that storms are expected to pummel parts of the North and Northeastern regions of the country. The weathermen say the freak storms which began earlier this week will continue through the weekend.

The department’s advisory stated that storms are expected to hit a swath of the country from Uttaradit, Phitsanulok and Udon Thani down as far as Bangkok. The storms are expected to bring thunder, lightning, heavy rain, strong winds and even hailstones.

The department cautioned people not to shelter under large trees or advertising billboards and, in addition, to stay out of large open areas. Storms from the beginning of the week have caused minor damage to houses and blown down trees in the north.

In the Nakhon Phanom district of Renoo Nakhon, a hailstorm saw stones the size of pebbles rain down on houses. Local residents said the storm was the worst they had seen in over three decades.

12GO ASIA notes that while summer storms before the onset of the rainy season in Thailand can be intense they rarely last long. They sometimes cause minor disruptions to bus and flight departures, but operators soon manage to catch up.
