Hanoi to restore and make Hoan Kiem Lake area more tourist friendly

City authorities in Hanoi say they plan to renovate streets and walkways around Hoan Kiem Lake so they are more pleasant for tourists. Hanoi People’s Committee head Nguyen Duc Chung says thoroughfares are being resurfaced with natural stone blocks while government offices in the locality are getting facelifts.

More ornamental shrubs and trees are being planted and drinking-water fountains will be erected at strategic locations. The committee’s chairperson added that Paris had already donated one fountain and the plan was to buy some more. He explained that all the improvements should be finished by June 2017 at the latest.

Germany is providing assistance with cleaning and dredging Hoan Kiem. Once this is completed, the plan is to pump more water in and raise the water level by 50 centimetres. The long-term aim is to create tourist zones around the lake where vendors will set up outlets offering souvenirs, drinks, fruit and snacks.

Hanoi began the re-gentrification of the landmark downtown district last year by setting up pedestrian only precincts on weekend evenings. Key tourism draws including the Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre and the landmark opera house are located in Hoan Kiem.
