Thai Airways unveils plans for Suvarnabhumi runway shutdown

The boss of the Thai national airline has revealed contingency measures for the planned partial shutdown of a runway at Bangkok’s main airport. One of Suvarnabhumi Airport’s three runways, 01R/19L, is closing down today to allow essential maintenance and repair work to be carried out.

THAI’s acting president is Usanee Sangsingkeo and she says the closure is sure to have an impact on flight schedules and especially so at peak arrival and departure times. She explained that airline ground staff would be on hand at Suvarnabhumi to help passengers with connecting flights.

Ms Sangsingkeo said all aircraft would be carrying additional fuel to allow for time spent waiting for landing or take off slots. THAI has also arranged for backup airports in case flights are unable to land at Suvarnabhumi. The maintenance work is expected to take two months and the provisional reopening date for the runway is the 5 May.

Suvarnabhumi is one of two Bangkok airports and the main gateway to Thailand for full service airlines. The other, Don Mueang Airport, is a hub for low cost carriers. 12GO ASIA is a reliable source for advance tickets for flights to and from both airports.
