Thailand tourism bureau mulls opening military bases for visitors

The deputy boss of Thailand’s tourism office has tabled a proposal to open military bases for Chinese visitors. Srisuda Wanapinyosak told reporters that military installations were off-limits in China and most people who lived there had never been to one.

She explained that army, navy or air force bases plus the likes of firing ranges and navy battleships were bound to be a magnet for Chinese or any other international visitors. Ms Wanapinyosak continued by saying the Tourism Authority of Thailand had already asked the navy for its help with the proposal,

The number of Chinese tourists visiting Thailand has increased significantly over the past few years. Figures for 2016 revealed almost nine million Chinese tourists came. The figure would have been higher, but in September the Thai government set a minimum spend per day of THB1,000 for Chinese people visiting on package holidays.

The move was designed to ensure Thailand reaped at least some benefit from the surge in tourist numbers as prior to this most of the income derived from the package tours was repatriated to China. Great beaches, attractions, cuisine and nightlife are Thailand’s key selling points. Economical travel choices are another contributory factor and 12GO ASIA can help you find the best deals on these.
