Yangon river taxi services to launch in May

Authorities in the Myanmar city of Yangon say river taxi services will launch this coming May. The Yangon Regional Transport Authority (YRTA) recently released a statement saying Tint Tint Myanmar Company had won the bid to supply services on the city’s Rangoon River and Nga Moe Yeik Canal.

Confirming the inauguration of the river transport services, Yangon chief minister U Phyo Min Thein explained that Tint Tint was the best choice. He expounded by saying the company had a lot of experience in running cruises such as the Mandalay-Bagan Irrawaddy Princess Cruise.

The YRTA put the contract to run river taxi services out to tender late last year. Only two companies submitted bids. The start of river-taxis is one of the measures authorities in Yangon are taking to alleviate ever-worsening traffic woes in the nation’s former capital city.

The YRTA also said the long-term plan was to integrate water-taxi piers into stops on Yangon’s city bus network. Yangon is the air gateway to Myanmar and a key hub for domestic transport routes. 12GO ASIA offers air ticketing services to Yangon as well as for in-country train and bus routes.
