Phnom Penh authorities set date for Skytrain feasibility study

Municipal transport officers in Phnom Penh say a viability study for a Skytrain line in the city will be carried out this coming April. A spokesperson told reporters the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) claims such a system would ease traffic congestion on the Cambodian capital’s streets.

Met Measpheakdey noted that the whole project was in the planning stages only and the study was meant to find out whether it was feasible, how much it would cost and if the JICA would help with funding. After the meeting at Phnom Penh’s City Hall, one JICA delegate outlined a possible route for a driverless Automated Guideway Transit system.

According to the Cambodia Daily, the line would run from Samdech Monireth Boulevard near the Olympic Stadium to the district of Choam Chao. This district is close to Phnom Penh Airport, the main gateway to Cambodia. The two locations are less than 10kms apart, but due to the city’s woeful traffic conditions the taxi journey takes far longer than it should.

12GO ASIA offers flight reservations from Bangkok, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur to Phnom Penh. The 12GO ASIA travel team says that while motorcycle-taxis are quicker for the trip to downtown Phnom Penh after arrival, they are not particularly safe.
