Ticket prices for domestic Thai flights increase

Airlines flying domestic routes in Thailand are in the process of increasing their ticket prices. Prices are going up by an average of THB150 for a single journey and in response to a hike in tax for aviation fuel in Thailand.

Thai AirAsia increased its fares with effect from the 1 February. Thai Lion Air, Thai Vietjet Air and Nok Air have all released statements saying their fares will go up on Monday 6 February. Thai Airways, Thai Smile and Bangkok Airways have not so far released news of any price increases but travel industry analysts say they will be forced to follow suit to absorb the impact of the tax hike.

The Thai government increased the duty on aircraft fuel by 2,000 per cent last week. The tax per litre rose from THB0.20 to THB4. The duty hike is only applicable to domestic flights and not international ones.

Somchai Poolsavasdi is the National Revenue Department’s Director and he says the increase should raise about THB4 billion a year in extra income. He explained that it would enable rail and bus operators to be more competitive as they had to pay THB6 a litre on diesel.

12GO ASIA is a leading travel choices consolidator with routes throughout Thailand and Southeast Asia. A spokesperson noted that despite the air fare increases, the company would strive to offer the most competitive prices for regional travel.
