South Thailand floods abate but more rain expected

Government officials in southern Thailand say floods across the region have abated and most transport links are now operational. However, the director of the national Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department says more rain is expected today.

Chatchai Promlert told media sources more of the unseasonal rainfall is expected this week, but clean up operations started last week will continue. The advent of the New Year brought with it torrential downpours in what is normally the dry season in Thailand and much of Southeast Asia.

Bridges on the main Bangkok to southern Thailand highway were washed away. Temporary bridges have now been installed and buses are again running to schedule. Likewise, train services suspended last Tuesday were restored at the end of the week once floodwater had drained off tracks south of Hua Hin.

Nakhon Si Thammarat Airport was shut for a week. It reopened on Friday evening after areas and facilities damaged by floods had been fixed. 12GO ASIA notes that flights, ferries, trains and buses in southern Thailand are now operating to their scheduled timetables.
