Thai minister says high speed Nakhon Ratchasima rail link will go ahead

The transport-minister of Thailand says it will be full steam ahead for a new high speed rail link this year. Confirming the new Bangkok-Nakhon Ratchasima line would be built, Arkhom Termpittayapaisith said work on the first 3.5kms of the line near Klang Dong Station would begin within the next month or so.

Once this tiny sector is complete, the government will put the remaining 256km out to tender. This segment will complete the first stage of the high-speed line and will be followed by a second phase from Nakhon Ratchasima to Nong Khai and Laos.

Minister Termpittayapaisith said initial estimations on completion dates were three years for phase one and five years for phase two.  Once the whole link is complete, it should provide journey times of just four hours between Bangkok and Vientiane, the capital city of Laos.

This northeast Thailand line is part of a proposed rail link which will begin in the Chinese city of Kunming, run all the way down through Laos, Thailand and Malaysia and terminate in Singapore. The project has been dubbed One Belt, One Road by China.
