Thailand to donate locomotive for rail link to Cambodia

A leading Cambodian politician says Thailand has agreed to supply a locomotive for a rail link between the two nations. Parliamentary representative Hun Many said that at a meeting earlier this month with Thailand’s prime-minister the latter had agreed to gift the engine as a gesture of goodwill.

The MP said Prayut Chan-o-cha had told him the soon-to-open international connection would facilitate the movement of tourists between the adjoining nations and provide ease for the transportation of goods. Although the official date for the reconnection of the Thai-Cambodian rail link has not been confirmed it is supposed to happen before the New Year.

The transport-minister of Cambodia, Sun Chanthol, confirmed the deadline two weeks ago. He said to mark the official relaunch of a line last used in the 1940s, the prime-ministers of the two nations would be aboard the first train to cross the border.

The original Cambodian northern line opened in the 1930s ran from Phnom Penh to Pursat, Battambang, Sisophon and the Thai border crossing at Poipet. The ruling French government scrapped service beyond Battambang in the 1940s. The last train from Phnom Penh to Battambang left in 2009.

Toll Royal Railway has a 30-year franchise to rehabilitate the Cambodian rail network and already relaunched limited Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville services last April. As and when new rail links are connected, 12GO ASIA will try to add them to our portfolio of travel ticketing choices.
