Ho Chi Minh City floats proposal to launch market on Saigon River

Municipal authorities in Ho Chi Minh City have put forward a proposal to establish a floating market on the city’s Saigon River. The city’s tourism bureau boss told attendees at a recent seminar the municipality would be wooing private investors to try and entice them into helping fund the project.

Bui Ta Hoang Vu continued by saying a Ho Chi Minh floating market would provide a similar format to Mekong Delta markets like Chau Doc and Cai Rang. The director said the same kind of market in Ho Chi Minh would be a bonus attraction and allow vendors to congregate and sell a diversity of produce and products.

At the same seminar, transport division director Bui Xuan Cuong noted that the city needed to better utilise its network of waterways for the transportation of residents, tourists and cargo. One attendee responded with a proposition to set up water-taxi services.
