New Kuala Lumpur MRT trains launch with free fares for a month

Travellers using a new train service in Greater Kuala Lumpur have been given the opportunity of riding for free. The Malaysian prime-minister announced the special fare waiver on Sungai Buloh to Semantan MRT services at inauguration ceremonies last Thursday.

Datuk Seri Najib Razak explained that the government had decided to offer free travel on the line to enable commuters and tourists to try out the modern carriages as well as give one and all an early New Year’s gift. Fares were free from 06:00 on Friday and will continue to be so until the 16 January 2017.

The Sungai Buloh to Semantan link incorporates 12 stations and is the first sector of a Mass Rapid Transit line that will eventually extend from the latter to Kajang. The Sungai Buloh to Semantan sector is 21kms long and elevated. After Semantan, the line will be underground as far as Taman Pertama and then overground again for the final stretch.

Commuters in Kuala Lumpur say the new MRT line will add to choices for travellers. Kuala Lumpur boasts a fairly modern public transport network. The system links all the main attractions, including Petaling Street in Chinatown and the Petronas Twin Towers, to KL Sentral Station and intercity bus terminals. 12GO ASIA is the number one choice for tickets from these stations to destinations including Johor Bahru, Butterworth and the Cameron Highlands.
