Sihanoukville sets and extends deadline for island ferry fare rises

The local council in Sihanoukville has set a minimum fare for ferries to the islands of Rong and Rong Samloem. The deadline for the introduction of a standard across-the-board fare of US$20 was due to come into effect on 1 December.

Ferry operators complained they did not have enough time to instigate the increase and city hall obliged by delaying the compliance date for one month. Quite a few different ferry operators provide services to the offshore islands and have been offering fares beginning at US$10.

Prior to the first deadline, Sihanoukville Province governor Yun Min explained that cut-price fares would eventually lead to a deterioration in service quality and flouting of safety rules. He carried on by saying if all companies had to charge the same fare it would put an end to the recent ticket price war at the Ochheuteal Beach pier.

Koh Rong Samloem and Koh Rong are about two kilometres apart and a 45-minute crossing from Sihanoukville. They attract with their chilled vibe, lovely beaches, unspoilt jungle and cheap and cheerful holiday resorts. 12GO ASIA recommends taking Giant Ibis buses from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville as the company’s terminus is only five minutes on foot from Ochheuteal Pier.
