Entry fees for Myanmar Inle Lake revert to US dollars

The required currency for entry fees to Myanmar’s Inle Lake is being changed to US dollars with effect from tomorrow. Instead of paying MMK12,500 to enter, visitors will now have to come up with US$10 before gaining admittance.

At today’s exchange rate, US$10 works out to almost MMK1,000 more. Zaw Htay Aung is the head of the Myanmar Tourism Association and he told local media sources that the recent increase in the value of the US dollar meant that it was better for Myanmar to collect fees in this currency.

The fee for Inle tickets was dollars until February this year. The reason for the changeover then according to ticket agency Myo Group was the depreciation of the dollar.

Tourism industry analysts say entry fees at other Myanmar sites such as Shwedagon Pagoda, Mandalay and Bago might follow suit and only be payable in dollars. They say tourists are better off buying a few dollars before travelling to Myanmar.

Inle is a massive freshwater lake in Myanmar’s Shan State. It is known for its beauty and the likes of villages built on stilts above the water, its traditional leg-driven boats and groups of ethnic minorities.

Nyaungshwe Township is on the north shore of the lake and 35kms from Heho Airport. 12GO ASIA is currently expanding ticket options for travel in Myanmar and hopes to add Heho and Nyaungshwe in the near future. We currently serve the major visitor destinations in the nation.
