Single use Thailand tourist visas free for three months

Thailand’s Ministry of the Interior has confirmed that single entry tourist visas will be issued free of charge for the next three months. The ministry has decided to waive the fee for all single use issues visas issued at overseas Thai embassies and consulates.

The fee waiver began on 1 December and will run through until the 28 February. The latest statement replaces an earlier one saying that only citizens of 19 countries were eligible for the visa fee exemption.

Single entry visas cost the equivalent of THB1,000 in the local currency of the issuing embassy or consulate. The fee waiver does not apply to six-month multiple-entry tourist visas and the standard charge of THB5,000 is still applicable when applying for one of these.

Tourist visas are valid for 60 days from the date of entry. Nationals of about 60 countries including the UK, the US, Canada, New Zealand and Australia are granted visa-free entry to Thailand at official immigration checkpoints.

Passport holders from the likes of India, China and Taiwan have to apply for visas on arrival. These normally cost THB2,000. The Ministry of the Interior says the cost of these will be halved to THB1,000 until the end of February.
