Laos Wattay Airport revamp on schedule for 2018 finish

The project manager in charge of upgrading the main international air gateway to Laos says it is on schedule for completion in 18 months time. Sengsangoun Chanthavong says the US$60 million expansion will give Vientiane’s Wattay Airport increased flight and passenger handling capacities.

Wattaya is getting new hangars and a taxiway plus the main runway and aircraft parking zones are being revamped. The expansion project began a year ago and is being funded by the Japanese development agency.

The number of passengers using the airport has increased dramatically over the past five years. In 2011, passenger numbers were 500,000. By 2014, the number had shot up to 1.1 million. The Lao Public Works and Transport Ministry says that if passenger arrivals and departures continue on this upward trajectory the number could be approaching the three million mark by 2018.

Wattay Airport is only four kilometres in a taxi or jumbo tuktuk from Vientiane’s Mekong Riverside district. 12GO ASIA provides varied transport options for travel to Vientiane. We sell budget friendly tickets for AirAsia flights from Bangkok as well as bus and train tickets to nearby Nong Khai.
